Hundreds of clubs enter the FA Cup each season, working through the extra preliminary, preliminary and four qualifying rounds to reach the first round proper, where they are joined by clubs from League One and League Two. Premier League and Championship sides do not enter until the third round in January, when the surviving clubs go head to head in one of the most eagerly awaited weekends of the football calendar. Since the 2024/25 season, FA Cup replays have been scrapped from the first round proper onwards, a change agreed between the FA and Premier League to ease fixture congestion. Any match still level after 90 minutes now goes straight to extra time and, if required, a penalty shootout, so every tie is settled on the day rather than dragging into a second match.
The third round is when the competition truly catches fire. All 20 Premier League clubs and 24 Championship sides enter alongside the clubs that have come through the earlier rounds, taking the draw to 64 clubs across 32 ties on the weekend of 9 and 10 January 2027. With no Premier League or Championship league fixtures scheduled that weekend, managers are expected to field strong sides, and lower league or non-league opposition regularly springs a giant killing against top flight opponents. Fans following the wider football schedule can expect the usual mix of local derbies, lower league upsets and a handful of televised shocks before the fourth round follows later in January.
From the fourth round onwards the draw narrows quickly, with the fifth round, quarter-finals and semi-finals whittling the field down to the two sides who will meet at Wembley Stadium on 22 May 2027. Manchester City go into the new campaign as defending champions after beating Chelsea 1-0 in the 2026 final to lift the trophy for the eighth time. Their progress, alongside the rest of the Premier League pack, will help shape the outright winner betting markets as the rounds go on and the field of contenders shrinks.
