A golf leaderboard displays a player's tournament position, total score, score to par (such as -7 or +2), current round score, holes completed in the active round, and scores from previous rounds.

A player is under par when they complete a round or tournament in fewer strokes than the course's designated par score. For instance, a round score of 65 on a par-72 course is seven under par (-7).

The cut is made after the opening 36 holes of a tournament. Players meeting the cut qualification criteria advance to play the weekend final rounds, while players above the score threshold are eliminated.

Bookmaker rules govern withdrawals. Outright bets are often voided if a player withdraws prior to starting their opening round, whereas withdrawals occurring after teeing off are typically settled as lost bets depending on specific operator terms.

Par is the number of shots a scratch golfer is expected to take to complete each hole or the full round. If a course is par 72 and a player shoots 65, they are -7 (7 under par). This is excellent. If they shoot 78, they are +6 (6 over par). In tournament golf, the lowest score to par across all completed rounds wins the event.

The Masters is held every April at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. It is an invitation-only event with around 88-100 players. The field plays four rounds of 18 holes. After round 2, a cut is made. The winner receives the iconic Green Jacket along with prize money from a purse of approximately $20 million. Previous champions and top-ranked players receive automatic invitations each year.

The PGA Tour is the premier professional golf circuit in the United States and globally. It runs a full-year schedule of tournaments across North America with events like The Players Championship (known as the fifth Major), the FedEx Cup Playoffs and major invitationals. The FedEx Cup is the season-long points race, with the top 70 players advancing to the playoffs and the top 30 to the Tour Championship. Prize funds range from $4 million to $25 million per event.

The DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) is the premier professional golf circuit in Europe and the second most prestigious tour globally. It covers events across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Top DP World Tour events include the BMW PGA Championship, the Scottish Open, the Irish Open and the Italian Open. Many of the world's best players, including Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, are DP World Tour members alongside their PGA Tour cards.

LIV Golf is a Saudi Public Investment Fund-backed breakaway golf series that launched in 2022. It uses a shotgun start format, 54-hole tournaments (no cut), and team competition alongside individual rankings. Former world number ones Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka joined LIV. LIV Golf and the PGA Tour announced a framework agreement in 2023 but negotiations over a full merger continued into 2026. LIV events are not covered under the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) as a standalone circuit.

Scottie Scheffler of the United States held the world number one ranking for the majority of 2025 and into 2026, having won multiple PGA Tour titles and the 2024 Masters. Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) remains firmly in the top 5, having completed his career Grand Slam at the 2024 US Open. Golf is one of the most popular betting sports in the UK. The main markets are outright winner (back a player to win the full tournament), each way (win or place in the top 5, 6, 8, 10 or 20 depending on the event and bookmaker), top 5 or top 10 finish, make or miss the cut, and head-to-head matchup betting between two named players. Each way (EW) betting is extremely popular in golf because fields of 150+ players make an outright win unlikely. An each way bet splits your stake between two bets: one on the player to win and one on the player to finish in the top number of places (typically top 5, 8, 10 or 20 in Majors). The place portion is paid at a fraction of the win odds, typically 1/4 or 1/5. For a Major with a 1/5 each way on top 20 places, if your player finishes 14th at 80/1, you lose the win part but collect 1/5 of 80/1 on the place portion.

Most UK bookmakers will void a bet if a player withdraws before they have teed off in the tournament. If a player starts the event and then withdraws through injury during a round, bets generally stand and the player is deemed to have finished in last place. Always check the specific terms of your chosen bookmaker before placing outright bets on golf events.

The Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) is the worldwide ranking system for professional golfers, updated every week. Points are awarded based on finishing position, field strength and tour classification. Events on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and major international tours all contribute ranking points. The top 50 in the OWGR at year end qualify automatically for all four Majors the following year. The ranking is used to determine exemptions, invitations and tour memberships.

Each hole has a par target. A birdie is scoring one under par on a hole (for example, scoring 3 on a par 4). An eagle is two under par on a hole (scoring 2 on a par 4, or 3 on a par 5). A double eagle (albatross) is three under par and extremely rare. A bogey is one over par. A double bogey is two over par. A par means you matched the target score for the hole exactly.

Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland is the highest-ranked British or Irish golfer and a former world number one. He completed his career Grand Slam at the 2024 US Open. Tommy Fleetwood (England) is a consistent top 10 finisher in Majors and a multiple DP World Tour winner. Tyrrell Hatton (England) competes on LIV Golf. The Open Championship, referred to in the UK simply as The Open, is the oldest Major golf championship and the only one played outside the United States. It rotates between links courses in Britain and Ireland including St Andrews (the home of golf), Royal St George's, Muirfield, Royal Birkdale, Royal Portrush and Hoylake. The 2026 Open Championship is scheduled at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.
