Basel 2-3 Ajoie: Result, 3 Sept 2026

Expect a competitive game with offensive bursts from both sides, where special teams could be decisive.

Ajoie's offense is characterized by its speed and creativity, leading to a Corsi For % of 52.8% and an Expected Goals For (xG) of 3.1 per game. Their power play is effective, converting at 22%, often exploiting defensive gaps with quick passes. Basel's offense is more methodical, with a Corsi For % of 49.5% and 2.7 xG per game. They excel in net-front presence and generating quality chances from sustained zone time. Their power play operates at a solid 20%, making special teams a key battleground.

Defensively, Ajoie can sometimes be prone to lapses, with a Corsi Against % of 51.2%, often trading chances. Their penalty kill is average at 79%. Basel's defense is more disciplined, focusing on shot suppression and tight coverage, resulting in a Corsi Against % of 48.8%. Their penalty kill is stronger at 83%. The key for Ajoie will be to minimize defensive zone turnovers and stay out of the penalty box, while Basel will aim to exploit Ajoie's defensive vulnerabilities with sustained pressure.

Ajoie's goaltending has shown flashes of brilliance but can be inconsistent, with their starter posting a .907 Save % and a GSAA of -0.8. This variability could be a concern against a disciplined Basel attack. Basel's netminder has been more reliable, with a .915 Save % and a GSAA of +2.5. His ability to make timely saves and control rebounds will be crucial in containing Ajoie's offensive bursts. A strong performance from Basel's goalie could be the difference-maker.

Ajoie will likely employ a high-pressure 1-2-2 forecheck to create turnovers and fuel their rush offense. Their neutral-zone defense might be more aggressive, aiming to force quick decisions. Basel will counter with a disciplined 1-3-1 neutral zone trap, designed to slow down Ajoie's speed and force dump-ins. They will prioritize a tight defensive zone structure, attempting to block shots and clear rebounds effectively.

Basel has shown good composure in close games, often tightening their defensive play in the third period and relying on their goaltender. Ajoie, while capable of offensive bursts, can sometimes be vulnerable to defensive breakdowns when under sustained pressure. Their overtime record is average, suggesting they prefer to settle games in regulation. The team that maintains discipline in the final minutes will have the edge.
